Garden Center members founded the San Antonio Garden for the Blind. The Garden is the cornerstone for what eventually became the San Antonio Botanical Garden.
The project stemmed from Center’s extensive garden therapy programs. Planning for the garden began in 1956 and dedicated fundraising began in 1967. Nine years later, on July 21, 1976, ground was broken and construction began. The groundbreaking ceremony featured San Antonio Mayor Pro Tem Al Rhode and two women from the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind guiding a mule and plow to create a furrow across the one-acre site.
Garden Center continues to support improvements at the Garden, which features plants with textures and fragrances that appeal to the senses of the visually impaired.
Contributions to the Garden for the Blind may be made through San Antonio Garden Center, Inc.
